Seasons and surf conditions: When is the best time to surf in Los Clavos?

Surfing-and-seasons-in-nicaragua

The year in Nicaragua is divided into the dry season/high season and the wet season/low season. Both seasons offer something for the surfers in Nicaragua, with some variations in the conditions. The dry season brings smaller, more approachable waves, perfect for new surfers, while the wet season delivers larger barrels and excellent conditions for more experienced surfers. But there will always be waves for you here, regardless of your skill level.

  • Dry season (summer): November to April

  • Wet season (winter): May to October

Dry season conditions: Fun and manageable surf

Dry season = high season! During this time, waves are generally smaller and cleaner, ideal for beginners and intermediate surfers looking for fun, manageable surf. Expect sunny days, consistent offshore winds, and warm water, creating ideal conditions for learning and refining your skills. The waves are mellow, making it an approachable time for anyone new to surfing.

Waves: Consistent, moderate-sized waves, typically ranging from 3 to 6 feet, provide accessible and fun surf for all skill levels.

Wind: Offshore winds are common, especially in the mornings and around sunset, resulting in clean, well-formed waves ideal for carving and long rides.

Wet season conditions: Powerful and exhilarating conditions

The wet season brings larger and more powerful waves, especially at certain breaks, attracting advanced surfers. Thanks to the consistent swells, this season promises exhilarating conditions, with bigger sets and more frequent barrels. Although there are occasional rain showers, they usually clear up by morning, leaving excellent conditions.

Waves: Wave heights range from 4 to 8 feet, and occasional swells reach up to 10 feet.

Wind: While onshore winds often pick up around late morning, favorable offshore winds are common during sunrise and sunset sessions, offering windows of cleaner conditions.

Surfboard recommendations: Which surfboard should I bring to Nicaragua?

Which-surfboard-should-i-bring-when-surfing-in-nicaragua

Choosing the right surfboard for Nicaragua depends on your skill level, the season, and the type of waves you want to catch. Here are some suggestions to help you get the most out of your surf experience in Los Clavos:

  • Longboards and funboards: Ideal for mellow, playful waves, especially during the dry season. These boards are perfect for smooth, flowing rides and are great for beginner to intermediate surfers looking to enjoy Nicaragua’s gentler conditions.

  • Fish and hybrid boards: Great all-rounders for varying conditions. These versatile boards handle both the smaller swells of the dry season and the occasional punchier waves that the wet season brings, giving you options for different wave sizes and styles.

  • High-performance shortboards: A shortboard or a step-up board is recommended for advanced surfers chasing bigger and more powerful waves, particularly in the wet season. These boards handle Nicaragua's more challenging conditions, allowing for responsive, high-performance maneuvers.

  • Soft-top boards: For beginners, a soft-top surfboard is always a safe and enjoyable choice, regardless of the season. These boards offer stability and ease, perfect for building confidence in the water.

Pack according to your skill level and the season, or feel free to explore our well-equipped quiver at the camp!

Transportation: How do I get to the surf camp in Nicaragua?

The most direct way to reach our camps is to fly into Managua’s Augusto C. Sandino International Airport (MGA). From the airport, our camp is about a three-and-a-half-hour drive away. Once you arrive, you have several transportation options:

  • Private shuttle: We can arrange a private shuttle directly from the airport to the camp for a comfortable, door-to-door service.

  • Car rental: You can also rent a 4x4 vehicle at the airport (Alamo is recommended, with a rental desk located in the main hall). Note that a 4x4 is essential, as the roads around the camp are muddy, rocky, and require crossing a river. Please contact us before you arrive, and we’ll provide up-to-date road and access information to ensure a smooth trip.

From Costa Rica

If you’re coming from Costa Rica, you can either fly or take a public bus that travels daily from San Jose to Managua and then onward to Chinandega, a town just 30 minutes from our camp.

  • Passport: Your passport must be valid for at least six months after you exit Nicaragua.

  • Travel insurance: Insurance may not be the most fun thing to consider when preparing for a surf trip, but good insurance can be a lifesaver! Check that your insurance covers surf-related accidents.

  • Swimwear and rashguard: Bring swimwear suitable for surfing (it’s never fun when you lose them mid-session!). The sun is strong in Nicaragua, so a rashguard is nice to wear to protect your skin from getting burned. We also provide rashguards at the camp.

  • Sunscreen: The tropical sun in Nicaragua can be intense, so pack an ocean-friendly (Oxybenzone-free), high-SPF sunscreen!

  • Adapter: The standard plugs in Nicaragua are type A and type B.

  • Cash: Both local currency and USD are widely accepted.

  • Surf hat: Protect your head and give your eyes a rest from the sun's rays while you're in the water.

  • Flipflops: You’ll spend most of your time on the beach in Nicaragua, so don’t forget to pack appropriate and comfortable footwear.
