World Ocean Day with Lapoint: How our surf camps give back
June 6, 2025World Ocean Day 2025 is more than just a date on the calendar; it’s a global call to action. We’re honoring the ocean that makes our love for surfing possible. At Lapoint, that means more than just celebrating; it means taking real steps to protect our playground and our home, one surf trip at a time.
Held annually on June 8th, World Oceans Day is a global reminder that the health of our oceans is vital to the health of our planet. Yet plastic pollution, overfishing, and habitat destruction are threatening marine ecosystems worldwide. The ocean is our home, so taking care of it is not just a nice gesture; it’s a responsibility.
This year, we’ve created a short documentary film, “Protecting Our Playground: Turning the Tide on Plastic Pollution”, to inspire our community to take action. The 6-minute film serves as a wake-up call for surfers and travelers alike, exploring the impact of plastic pollution on marine life, the harm it causes, and the future of our oceans. It also shows that we can all be part of the solution.
Quick facts: Why World Ocean Day matters
Date: June 8 every year
Purpose: Raise global awareness about the importance of healthy oceans
Founded by: Originally proposed in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro
Recognized by the UN: Officially since 2008
4 reasons surfers should care about World Ocean Day
The ocean is our playground: from perfect waves to peaceful paddle-outs, it's where we recharge, challenge ourselves, and connect with nature. Protecting it means preserving the lifestyle we love so much.
Surf spots are under threat: Pollution, coral bleaching, and coastal development are affecting wave quality and marine ecosystems worldwide.
We’re on the frontlines: Surfers see the impact of ocean pollution firsthand. We're in a unique position to be ocean advocates, starting conversations and inspiring action in and beyond the lineup.
Every ripple counts: Small choices, such as skipping single-use plastics or joining a beach cleanup, can have a great impact when combined. World Ocean Day is a global movement, and surfers can be powerful voices in shaping a sustainable future for our oceans.

We’re sharing our short documentary "Protecting Our Playground: Turning the Tide on Plastic Pollution." This 6-minute film is both a wake-up call and a source of hope.
In the video, we explore:
Why the ocean matters more than ever
The invisible plastic in our daily lives
How plastic pollution impacts marine life and our surf spots
Four simple actions you can take today to reduce your plastic footprint
Since 2017, Lapoint guests and staff have helped collect over 33,000kg of plastic through beach cleanups across our camps. It’s just one example of how a surf community can come together to make changes together.
Our Mission: So much more than surf trips

At Lapoint, we believe that a healthy planet is essential for our future, as a company, a community, and as surfers. That’s why sustainability is a part of what we do.
We focus on:
The impact we have on the planet as a travel company
The impact we have on the ocean as a surf company
The impact we have on the communities where we operate
The impact we have on our global team of employees
We back our values with action, dedicating 1% of our total turnover to support environmental and social efforts.
Small changes, big impact: What can you do to help our oceans?

Wondering how you can help? Start with these:
Say no to single-use plastic in your day-to-day life and when you travel
Bring your own reusable water bottle and cup
Say no to microbeads in skincare and toothpaste
Join local cleanups or organize your own
And next time you paddle out, take a moment to appreciate the ocean’s power and beauty – then take Three for the Sea: pick up three pieces of trash and inspire others to do the same.
