7 things to do in Fuerteventura (besides surfing!)

Fuerteventura is an island of volcanoes, sand dunes, and crystal clear water and is known to be Europe’s version of Hawaii with its amazing surf. Are you not sure Fuerteventura should be the next location for your surf adventures? Here are our top seven reasons (besides surfing!) for visiting this paradise of an island.

Besides the amazing surf spots that Fuerteventura has to offer, there are plenty of things to explore around the island and in the water, even without your board. Here are seven reasons why you should make Fuerteventura your next surf destination.

Where is Fuerteventura?

Fuerteventura is located in the Atlantic Ocean and is the second largest of the Canary Islands. This Spanish island is a popular destination for watersports such as windsurfing and surfing with its beautiful beaches and pleasant weather. Fuerteventura is located really close to Morocco compared to the other Canary Islands and it has a more African feel to it.

The Canary Islands are known for being busy holiday destinations with big hotels and many tourists, that is a side of the island you’ll not see at our surf camp. The camp is located in a town called Lajares which is in the north center of the island. Which is about a ten-minute drive to the surf spots.

What to do in Fuerteventura?

Fuerteventura is one of Europe's most popular surf destinations, it has even got the nickname the Hawaii of Europe. Even though the waves are on the bigger side from October to April, the island has beginner-friendly spots for the ones who are just starting their surf journey. Cool bars and cafes are nearby and great surf spots in each direction from the camp. Explore the island and enjoy the sand dunes, lagoons, beautiful beaches, and cliffs.

7 reasons to choose Fuerteventura as your next holiday destination (besides surfing!)

So, why choose Fuerteventura? We list our seven top reasons:

  1. Volcano hikes

  2. Go camelback riding

  3. Spend the day on a catamaran

  4. Dive into the clear water and see the underwater life

  5. Explore the sand dunes

  6. Take a dip in the rock pools

  7. Take surfskate lessons at our camp

1. Volcano hikes

If you want to hike in Fuerteventura, we recommend you hike up the Calderón Hondo volcano. From the top, you’ll see the crater of the volcano and a gorgeous view of the landscape. The hike up the volcano takes roughly 40 minutes and the path is easy to find and pretty simple to walk. It’s the perfect spot to watch the sun go down over the ocean.

2. Go camelback riding

What cooler way to experience the amazing landscape than on the back of a camel? Over five centuries ago, the camels arrived in Fuerteventura and became a part of the island's identity.

3. Spend the day on a catamaran

Spend a sunny day out on the ocean on a catamaran. There you can dive into the turquoise water from the boat, snorkel among the fish and eat great food with even better company. Sunbathe on the deck or take the SUP out and go paddle boarding.

4. Dive into the clear water and see the underwater life

The water is very clear in Fuerteventura so it’s a great opportunity to go diving and explore all the underwater life and beauty. See the island from a different perspective with the volcanic formations on the ocean floor and a great variety of ocean animals.

5. Explore the sand dunes

Take a trip to the Corralejo Natural Park on the north side of the island and explore the sand dunes. The dunes will give you a sense of being in the Sahara and the natural park stretches out for 10 kilometers along the coast. It truly must be on the list of things to experience!

6. Take a dip in the natural rock pools

There are plenty of naturally shaped pools amongst the rocks of the coast. These rock pools are the perfect place to take a dip after a hot day, but remember to check the tides before you go since the rock pools are very affected by the high and low tides. Here the low tides are your friends!

7. Take surfskate lessons at our camp

Not only is surf skating fun but it can also help you improve your surfing skills. At our camp, you can surfskate together with the other guests and outside of the camp, you’ll find plenty of good long roads to practice, surrounded by the amazing landscape of the island.
