A bunch of stoked kiters; Emmi, Josi, Thomas & Marit linked up in Portugal to revel in the opportunity to kite in both flat water and waves in Esposende. Read on for Marit’s story on their trip to a place where you can kite, wave surf and mountain bike – all while being close to restaurants, parties and a vibrant social scene near the ocean.
The perfect start
Our first day we woke up to blue skies, sunshine and warm weather. Elin, our camp manager from Sweden, had already prepared a delicious breakfast with yoghurt, fruits, strawberries, granola, warm bread and eggs –a fitting start for a full day of kiting and action on the water. After a quick wind-check from the rooftop balcony, we realized that the conditions were ideal.
We quickly made our way to the kite centre, located about a kilometre from the villa at the end of a picturesque boardwalk along the river, which is excellent for bike riding or longboarding. All kite gear, wetsuits and surfboards are stored at the kite centre, so it’s easy to pack for the day and hit the spot when the conditions are right.
The kite spot
Once we arrived at the centre, local stand-out, Paquet, took us to the long white beach on the other side of the river. It was blowing 20 knots, but the water was still butter flat, well protected from the sand dunes that separate the river from the ocean. This makes it perfect for beginners who want to learn, and for experienced kiters who want to improve their level and practice tricks.
The instructors were teaching at the upper part of the beach, and there was plenty of space for us and other riders to enjoy the lagoons downwind from the schools. We could not wait to get amongst it!
After a long, glorious day on the water, we returned exhausted and happy to the villa for a sunset BBQ on the rooftop balcony with our new friends. This evening will be remembered dearly as a night full of fun stories and good food.
In the following days and the rest of the week, the wind was right, Paquet smiled, we kited, we laughed, and we ate tasty meals together with our friends at the camp. We also got into all the other fun stuff you can do in Esposende like SUP, mountain bike and explore beautiful hiking- and running tracks, all within walking/biking distance from the camp. In short, it was a memorable week filled with kiting and Goodtimes! We will definitely come back soon.
