I kited every day

Travel letter – 2 weeks in Croatia – Valentin Launay

The first week in Croatia started like last year. Ivona met us at the airport in Split with a big smile: “Welcome back”. Ivona is the local heroine who makes sure that everything is going smoothly at the camp. She organizes every meal, at the beach and home at the camp. She makes sure that our week are filled up with unique adventures and much more. The meals at the camp are delicious. All meat, fish, vegetables and fruits served are from local producers, our neighbours being some of them.

Kiting every day: The first week we had wind blowing from south every day, which is rare for Neretva kite spot. But the conditions were still great for kiting! We did other activities before lunch if the wind came in late. One day we visited Makarska, a picturesque village on the Croatian coast. The Riviera is surrounded by beautiful mountains, and is famous for its long beaches and azure blue waters. The wind was already picking up when we came back to Neretva, and we kited for three wonderful hours before heading back to dinner at the house.

You are very unlucky if you have days with no wind in Neretva. The wind is thermic, and usually picks up during the afternoon, even if the forecast looks bad. However, if there is one day with no wind, there are plenty of other things to do, like visiting the famous town and bridge Mostar in Bosnia Herzegovina, dive into the turquoise water next to the waterfalls in Kravica, SUP paddling and canoe safari in lakes and rivers, climbing and more.

The second week started perfect: The wind was blowing from day 1, and the atmosphere among the guests was great. We were a mix of people from Norway, United States, France and Belgium, and of all ages. This is one of unique things about being at a camp: I meet likeminded people from all around the world that I would never have met in my normal daily life.

We had wind every day from noon until sunset. It always blows an extra 5 knots as the sun sets, making the last session of the day perfect with huge jumps surrounded by beautiful colours from the sun going down.

On our last day we visited a beautiful and famous beach in Gradac. We ended the day and a perfect week back at the kite spot in with a barbeque, followed by a party in the beach bar with the local kiters.

Saturday was my departure day and my turn to say goodbye to Ivona, camp manager Johannes, the locals, the other guests and Croatia. It was difficult to leave the place after two weeks with wind almost every day, sun and friendly people. Neretva is a special place that one can only dream off, and you have to search for a long time to find anything similar.

This was my second time at Lapoints kite camp in Croatia and Neretva, and it is definitely not going to be the last.
